Bacchanalia (previously known as the Jug and Firkin) off licence, 90 Mill Road, Cambridge CB1 2BD. [map] T: 01223 315034. I had mistakely listed the Jug and Firkin as closed but Nick tells me that "The shop remains open, and continues to stock a wonderful selection of beers from all four corners of the globe. Visitors may have more joy in finding this veritable emporium of alcohol if they ask for it by its newer name, "Bacchanalia". I am a regular customer, and on my last visit they had a tremendous range of German brews on offer, with a particular emphasis on Bamberg and Franconia. The following is just a small selection of the gems available: Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier, Rauchbier-Weizen and the brewery's limited edition Lagerbier; Tegernseer Spezial (in my opinion the best light-coloured beer in the world); Hetzelsdorfer Landbier; Hartmann Erbschänk Schwarzbier; Augustiner Oktoberfest; Kneitinger Bock and Dunkel; Karg Weißbier in dunkel and hell variations as well a selection of specialities from Kloster Andechs. They also keep a huge amount of beers from Belgium, France, Holland, the UK and the US in addition to other countries." Fantastic -- go get some. Also, localsecrets.com states that Bacchanalia has another shop at 79 Victoria Road. Check it out and let me know.

A wine retailer stocking "90 different beers from all over the world, including many German ones from Bitburger and Krombacher Pils to Früh Kölsch, Erdinger, Augustiner, etc. Also several dozen Belgian beers incl. Gueuze, Trappist, Golden, Red ales, etc.". Website doesn't currently list the beers [August 2004].
